Even the "commercial" mats I've come across on sites specializing in exercise equipment have topped out around 3/8". You can get thicker if you buy the rubber tiles, but I wanted a mat. That said, the near commercial grade stepper I have on it fits nicely, it did not have any peculiar smells, and it seems that it will last as long as I'm careful.
